 The Walking Trails

The following are the brief itineraries of the various walking trails used by Wellington Wine Walk on their walks. These walk itineraries can change at times due to unforeseen events.

BUCHU AND OLIVE TRAIL (16km)

We are taken by tractor and trailer from Diemersfontein Wine Estate to the foot of the original Dutoitskloof Pass. We walk up hill for about 30 minutes and then stroll along contour paths through the forest and fynbos until we reach the forestry station. From there we descend upon the biggest and oldest buchu and olive farms in the country, then proceed to the impressive Cascade Manor for lunch and visit the waterfall. After lunch we walk through olive groves to Augusta Kleinbosch with a tasting of olive products along the way.

Moderate, short uphill, mostly level and downhill.

Our guides were excellent, friendly, knowledgeable and fun to be with. The accommodation was great and interesting. The routes were spectacular.

We had great meals and everyone involved were very hospitable.

Congratulations to the team.

Kind regards to all,

Gail and Vere

KUIER TRAIL (15-18km)

("Kuier" means having a relaxed and sociable visit - in this case to some very innovative farmers)

We start at Augusta\Kleinbosch and walk around Kleinbosch koppie through the fynbos to Uitkyk where a tractor takes us up a steep hill to a hut. There the du Plessis family will present a buchu and vine propagation ("stokkies") talk, tastings of olive products and pinotage jam. After a good "kuier" we proceed to Welgegund for a wine tasting and then to Hildenbrand Estate for lunch, olive oil and wine tasting. If we can tear you away, we should reach the next guest house at about 17h00.

Moderate, short uphill, mostly level.

BOVLEI TRAIL (10km)

A shuttle takes us up the Bain's Kloof Pass to the "tunnel" where we descend with a steep farm track through the fynbos to the Doolhof Estate for our first wine tasting. We then walk to Nabygelegen for lunch, a cellar tour and tasting. After lunch we walk past an award winning farm garden to the Bovlei Mission Church. The shuttle fetches us there and takes us to Lelienfontein to taste the Bosman Family wines. Guests can pay an optional visit to the Redemption Leather factory before the end of the tour.

Downhill and level, easy hiking.

GROENBERG TRAIL (12km)

We walk from Bovlei Valley Retreat past another farm garden and up the hill to Twyfeling. From there we proceed upwards against the slopes of Groenberg until we reach the highest contours. Views are breathtaking from here. We then proceed around the foothills and descend upon Linton Park Estate for a wine tasting. From there a shuttle takes us to the farm Welbedacht. We follow a vineyard trail to the tasting facility where we taste wine and have a picnic before we are shuttled back to our cars.

Steep uphill for about 2 hours with lots of photo stops to catch your breath, then downhill and level.

Bain’s Kloof Historical and Botanical Walk (OPTIONAL EXTRA)

(This walk can either be added as a fifth day or alternatively be incorporated in a 3 or 4 day walk where one day can be replaced)

Accompanied by one of our guides, you will be taken by shuttle to Eerste Tol on the neck of Bain’s Kloof Pass where you will be met by Sandra Steytler and/or Hans Nieuwmeyer, co-authors of Bain’s Kloof Pass – Gateway to the North. They will lead a historical walk down the pass to Tweede Tol, imparting their extensive knowledge concerning the building of the pass. Hans, retired engineer and UCT lecturer, will inform you about the techniques that were employed and you will be shown the dry stone retaining walls from close up. After a picnic lunch at Tweede Tol, we will do a leisurely botanical hike.

A substantial amount of the income generated from this walk will be donated to The Friends of Bain’s Kloof for the eradication of invasive plants in the pass.

Gentle down-hill on road for 2 hrs,  then gentle up and down in side kloof
